Today, artisans work sustainably with native woods from the jungle in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in Campeche. As part of their preparation process, the woods undergo a lengthy drying process before being worked and transformed into unique pieces. Stone carving, ranging from miniature to monumental pieces, was one of the greatest artistic expressions of the ancient Maya. Today, artisans keep this technique alive by using stones such as Maya cream, representative of the Yucatan Peninsula, to create unique pieces with unparalleled finishes.
