The possibilities for exploration with the backstrap loom are infinite, as designer Sandra de Huelbes demonstrates in collaboration with the artisans of the backstrap-loom workshop in the Nube bag. The distinctive shape is achieved through joins and studs, which gives new life to this ancestral technique. The bag is one of the outcomes of the Visión y Tradición residency program led by Design Week México and México Territorio Creativo. Made-to-order product. Estimated production time: 40 days. The technique of Maya backstrap weaving was developed in the western mountains of Guatemala before the arrival of the Spaniards. The technique involves weaving cotton threads with a pair of sticks that, little by little, form a canvas with the movement of the weaver to the rhythm of the back and forth of the rods. Henequen, being a fiber with qualities such as flexibility, softness, and durability, makes it the perfect raw material for working with this technique.
